Welcome to Lewis County and
Snowkiting on the Tug Hill Plateau!
Welcome to Lewis County! Snowkiting Capital of the east coast. Lewis County and Tug Hill have been called the Skyline of the east, and rightly so. With an annual average snowfall of over 300 inches, and home of the Maple Ridge Wind Farm, the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi, we have what it takes to be the snow kiting capital of the east. No longer are you confined to frozen bodies of water to enjoy snowkiting. With massive lake effect snow, major winds blowing across Lake Ontario and generous farmers willing to open their fields and varying terrain to fly on across the County, this very green recreation is steadily growing on Tug Hill.
The 9th annual Tug Hill Snowkite Rally
For the 9th year, Lewis County will be hosting the Tug Hill Snowkite Rally, which has been gaining popularity over the years for it's consistently great conditions that rival anywhere else in the Northeast! Hundreds of kiters have come to our festival, and it is growing every year. The best way to experience snow kiting on Tug Hill is to make the festival, get the tour of sites, and have a great time. This year the festival takes place
February 13th-15th, 2016. Please check out our Rally page to get more information.
We are working on more permanent sites available all winter long, and the locals not only encourage snow kiters but embrace them when they get there. Check our maps page for the most up-to-date information. Remember: Our landowners are very generous. Please do not poach fields. Ask for permission, and if you find a great site, get the landowner’s information and contact the Lewis County Department of Recreational via this web form.
